For parents of a child with achondroplasia, there can be a lot of unanswered questions about what the future may hold.
Dr Melita Irving, skeletal dysplasia specialist and lead clinician at Guy’s and St. Thomas’ in London, speaks to InTheKnow to answer the questions she receives most from new and expecting parents.
“A diagnosis of achondroplasia is often a shock to parents,” states Dr Irving. “They’ve usually never heard of achondroplasia before.”
“Although achondroplasia is a genetic condition,” she continues, “for the majority of people with it there is no family history.”
Although diagnosis can come as a shock, Dr Irving reminds us that those with the condition can “live very happy and fulfilling lives.”
